About my journey – The beginning of the rest of your life
Hi. You’re probably here because you have a burning passion and have something to say about it but you literally have no idea how to get it out there in the nether, right?
Take me. I’ve had so many things to say for a good four years now. I wanted to enact change, any change. Just help someone be better at anything they want to be. It’s been a lifelong dream and passion of mine. To be heard, and help people. I’m one of those people that feeds from those two things, so it’s always been at the back of my mind to do this. And well, I finally achieved it.
But it wasn’t easy. No, no, no.
I bet there’s a few of you out there that are still trying to find their place in all this, have so much to say but no-one is reading. I get that. My material was solid, and, it can help a good few people when applied, but did anyone want to read me?
When there’s so many other great content out there for people to grab from. Why would they want to read me?
I get it. I mean, I really do.
Three years ago when I was made redundant from my job and I knew I wanted to take to the web. I had some interesting ideas how to go about it. The passion was raw and I was ready to go. I took my keyboard to the computer and started bashing out a few posts, confident that I would be read by thousands and thousands. It was quite a surprise when I barely reached 10 views on a super good day. Yep, and it was a bad experience when I realised that thousands upon thousands, no, perhaps millions of people were doing the same thing as me. Not getting heard. It started to become very frustrating. For the first time ever, I contemplated the small-sizedness of me in comparison to the entire world. Yes, it’s bloody mind-boggling.
For many months I ploughed out material, for nothing. Becoming more and more disheartened by each and every post. I would watch in horror as my visitors would dwindle as I barely hit one or two people. It’s hard, really, when SEO is a professional game and I had no clue about it. I was angry and frustrated for quite a few months. My content was top class and spot on,
Why, oh why, wasn’t I reaching those that needed me?
If only the world was idealistic, right?
It all changed when I discovered how to properly market myself. You see, regardless of what anyone tells you, blogging is about 10% writing and 90% getting yourself out there. Talking to new people, learning new tactics, and venturing down avenues to spread content over the web. And it can be done with minimal cost too, if your content is strong enough, because content is key. Anyone can set up a site with minimal effort and drive millions of people there, but if it sucks, then, they won’t stay.
Whatever you do, don’t get caught in the trap of asking yourself
“What if my content isn’t good enough?”
Chances are, if you’re spending time and effort on your content, and it’s something that you truly believe in, then others will read. You only need to get them onto your site, and keep them there.
My official blog has between 20 and 30,000 engaged visitors monthly now.
I’m The Relationship Blogger – that’s my home. People said I should help others learn marketing. So this site was born!
So. First things first.
Pinterest was the first avenue I walked down, and I was amazed at how super easy it was to gain traffic from them. I was seeing extra traffic each day and every day since then, and it’s only travelled in an uphill direction since then until I’m nearly seeing 500 hits from them daily. It takes time, though. That wasn’t an overnight process, 500 hits. And, of course, it took lots of networking with the right people.
Pro tip: Add value, solve problems, give people what they want to know. Don’t blog about your day. Who’s interested in that?
I’ll be posting here once a day from now on. We’ll dive deep into growth methods, the psychology of writing, and the pitfalls to be wary of. I’ll take you on a rollercoaster ride of awesomeness until you are practically on the same wavelength as me.
And the best thing?
I’m learning something all the time. And if I learn it? You bet I’ll be pushing it to you.
Stay with me, because it won’t stop at marketing. A large part of what I do is the way I write to people. I’ll be handing you the tricks and methods that I’ve learned to essentially captivate and inspire my readers. In a good way of course.
If you don’t know I have my own Blog on The Huffington Post and I have a Column on The Good Men Project.
Yeah, I’m good.
You should listen to me.
I REALLY hope you enjoy this!
